Schickel begins by tracing Eastwood's humble beginnings in San Francisco. Eastwood was born in 1930, and his early life was marked by poverty and instability. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather. Eastwood dropped out of high school and joined the Army, where he served as a lifeguard at Fort Ord in California.

After his discharge from the Army, Eastwood moved to Los Angeles and began his acting career. He landed small roles in a number of films and television shows, but it wasn't until he was cast as the lead in the spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars (1964) that he achieved stardom. Eastwood's performance as the enigmatic "Man with No Name" made him an international star, and he went on to star in a number of other successful westerns, including For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

In the 1970s, Eastwood began to transition from westerns to other genres. He starred in the crime thriller Dirty Harry (1971),which became one of his most iconic roles. He also directed a number of successful films, including Play Misty for Me (1971) and The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976).

In the 1980s and 1990s, Eastwood continued to star in a variety of films, including The Bridges of Madison County (1995) and Absolute Power (1997). He also directed a number of critically acclaimed films, including Bird (1988) and Mystic River (2003).

In recent years, Eastwood has continued to work as an actor and director. He has starred in a number of films, including Million Dollar Baby (2004) and Gran Torino (2008). He has also directed a number of successful films, including J. Edgar (2011) and Sully (2016).
