By Wayne Tamosaitis

I was just an old telephone man, but I had a front-row seat to the golden age of telecommunications. I started working for Bell Telephone in 1955, and I retired in 1990. During those years, I saw the telephone system grow and change in ways that would have been unimaginable to the early pioneers of the industry.

In the early days, telephones were a luxury. Only the wealthy and the well-connected had them. But by the time I retired, telephones were commonplace. They were in homes, businesses, and even cars.

The growth of the telephone system was driven by a number of factors, including the invention of the transistor, the development of new switching technologies, and the expansion of the rural telephone network.

The transistor was a key invention because it made it possible to build smaller, more reliable, and more affordable telephones. The development of new switching technologies also made it possible to connect more telephones to the network. And the expansion of the rural telephone network brought telephone service to millions of people who had never had it before.

I was fortunate to be a part of this exciting time in the history of telecommunications. I worked on a variety of projects, from installing new telephone lines to repairing damaged equipment. I also got to meet some of the pioneers of the industry, including Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.

In this book, I share my memories of those days. I tell stories about the challenges and the rewards of working as a telephone lineman. I also describe the technological advancements that I witnessed firsthand.

I hope that you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
