In the years following the Civil War, the United States government implemented a system of segregation known as Jim Crow. This system of laws and customs enforced the separation of African Americans from whites in all aspects of life, including education, housing, transportation, and employment.

The photographs in this book offer a glimpse into the lives of African Americans who lived under Jim Crow. They show the challenges and hardships they faced, as well as their resilience and determination.

The book is divided into four chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of life in the segregated South. The first chapter, "Education," features photographs of segregated schools and the students who attended them. The second chapter, "Housing," shows the dilapidated and overcrowded housing that African Americans were forced to live in. The third chapter, "Transportation," documents the segregated buses and trains that African Americans were forced to use. The fourth chapter, "Employment," shows the limited job opportunities that were available to African Americans.

The photographs in this book are a powerful and moving reminder of the horrors of segregation. They are also a testament to the strength and resilience of the African Americans who lived through this era.
