The magazine was founded by Fletcher Harper, Jr., the son of Fletcher Harper, Sr., one of the founders of Harper & Brothers, the publishing house that produced Harper's Young People. The magazine's first editor was William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Evening Post. Bryant served as editor until his death in 1878, when he was succeeded by Edward Eggleston, the author of The Hoosier Schoolmaster.

Harper's Young People was a large magazine, with each issue running to 16 pages. The magazine was printed on high-quality paper and featured numerous illustrations, both black-and-white and color. The magazine's cover was typically illustrated by one of the most famous artists of the day, such as Thomas Nast or Winslow Homer.
