The magazine was founded by Fletcher Harper, Jr., the son of Fletcher Harper, Sr., one of the founders of Harper & Brothers, the publishing house that produced Harper's Young People. The magazine's first editor was William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Evening Post. Bryant served as editor until his death in 1878, when he was succeeded by Edward Eggleston, the author of The Hoosier Schoolmaster.
